A couple of years ago I treated tools like ChatGPT as a curiosity. It was interesting to play with, but it didn’t feel like something that could meaningfully change how I worked. That perception shifted gradually, not because AI suddenly became “smarter,” but because I started integrating it into real tasks instead of asking it abstract questions.
Today, AI is not something I use occasionally. It’s woven into my daily workflow, mostly in places where friction used to slow me down — understanding unfamiliar code, drafting repetitive pieces of logic, and navigating poorly documented systems.
What surprised me most is that the real value of AI isn’t in generating finished code. It’s in accelerating understanding.
One of the earliest changes I noticed was how much less time I spent getting oriented in unfamiliar codebases. In the past, onboarding to a new project with weak documentation meant hours of reading files just to build a mental map of how things connected. Now, when I encounter a new service or module, I can paste relevant fragments into ChatGPT and ask it to walk me through what is happening.
It doesn’t replace actual reading, but it gives me a structured starting point. Instead of staring at code trying to reconstruct intent from scratch, I begin with a rough conceptual model. That shift alone significantly reduces the cognitive cost of context switching.
I experienced this most clearly when joining a project that had grown organically over several years. The user flows were buried across multiple services, and there was almost no architectural documentation. By using a combination of Copilot suggestions and ChatGPT explanations, I was able to trace how requests moved through the system far faster than I would have otherwise. It wasn’t magic — I still needed to verify everything — but it shortened the “unknown unknowns” phase dramatically.
Another place where AI quietly saves time is in writing the kinds of code that are necessary but rarely interesting. Test cases are a good example. I rarely ask ChatGPT to design tests from scratch, but I often use it to generate a first draft once I know what behavior needs to be covered.
The process typically looks the same. I plan the logic myself, then describe the scenario clearly, including constraints and expected outcomes. The model produces a structured draft, which I then refine. This hybrid approach works well because it preserves control while removing much of the mechanical effort.
The same pattern applies to things like SQL queries or documentation. AI is especially useful when dealing with complex queries that involve multiple joins or aggregation layers. It rarely produces a perfect solution on the first attempt, but it almost always gets close enough to reduce the time spent constructing everything manually.
What has emerged over time is a workflow that is neither fully manual nor fully automated. I think of it less as delegating work to AI and more as using it as an external thinking aid. I still design the architecture, make trade-offs, and decide how components interact. AI handles the parts of the process that benefit from rapid iteration rather than deep reasoning.
This distinction matters because it also highlights where AI currently struggles. The biggest limitation I encounter is its difficulty maintaining large context. When conversations become long or involve complex systems, the model gradually loses precision. Details get blurred, assumptions drift, and suggestions become less reliable.
Because of this, AI works best when tasks are scoped narrowly. When I try to treat it as a persistent “project memory,” it inevitably fails. When I use it as a focused assistant for well-defined problems, it performs consistently.
There is also the issue of overconfidence. AI often presents incorrect solutions with complete certainty, especially when edge cases are involved. This means that any serious use still requires careful review. In practice, this hasn’t been a major obstacle, because reviewing AI output is still faster than producing everything from scratch.
If I had to summarize the impact of AI on my daily work, I wouldn’t describe it as automation. The biggest change is the reduction of friction. Tasks that previously interrupted flow — looking up documentation, reconstructing logic, writing repetitive scaffolding — now happen faster and with less mental overhead.
That shift allows more attention to stay on the parts of engineering that actually require judgment: deciding what should be built, how systems should evolve, and which trade-offs matter most.
AI hasn’t replaced any of those responsibilities. It has simply made the path to them shorter.

For developers, the most effective way to use tools like ChatGPT is not as a code generator, but as a productivity multiplier. Its strength lies in accelerating comprehension and reducing routine work, not in making decisions.
Used this way, AI doesn’t change what it means to be an engineer. It changes how quickly you can move from uncertainty to understanding.
And in complex systems, that speed is often the most valuable resource you have.
